GMO Purple Tomatoes Get Closer to Grocery Store Shelves

It might not be long before you spy purple tomatoes on store shelves.

Purple tomatoes are the newest genetically modified organism (GMO) developed by a group of British scientist. The purple tomatoes were created by implanting genes from snapdragon plants into the fruits. According to the group of scientists that created the GMO, purple tomatoes can offer the same type of benefits that cranberries and blueberries give, reports Smallholder.

“We want to explore a way for consumers to benefit from our discoveries, as we are finding there is a demand for the added health benefits,” Professor Cathie Martin, of the John Innes Centre, told The Norfolk Eastern Daily Press.

The first batch of purple tomato juice is ready to be shipped to stores in Canada. The first shipment will include 1,200 liters of the purple juice. One company in Canada is also working to farm tomatoes. That company is farming enough tomatoes that is will be able to make 2,000 liters of juice, Smallholder notes.
