An industry research firm says that Google’s (GOOG) mobile operating system will continue to dominate the smartphone and tablet markets this year.
According to Gartner, more than 1.1 billion Android devices from a variety of manufacturers, will ship during 2014. That puts the GOOG mobile OS far ahead of its major rivals, Apple’s (AAPL) iOS and Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows, the Morning Ledger notes.
In fact, this year just 344 million iOS devices and 360 Windows devices will ship this year. GOOG already has the overwhelming share of the global mobile device operating system market.
GOOG is moving to expand its reach into wearable computers with its Google Glass headgear, which is expected to launch this year.
In addition to mobile devices, GOOG is also planning to develop robots. GOOG recently purchased Boston Dynamics, which builds robots for the Pentagon.
GOOG stock rose slightly in Wednesday afternoon trading. GOOG stock topped $1,000 a share in October and has continued to climb since.
