Microsoft (MSFT) could be in serious trouble for allegedly paying YouTubers to post videos promoting the Xbox One.
An Ars Technica report claims that Microsoft has been promoting the Xbox One by paying YouTube (GOOG) users to give ‘positive’ and ‘neutral’ reviews of the console. The promotion is part of a campaign struck alongside Machinima.com where it allegedly offered $3 for every 1,000 YouTube views per video.
A leaked copy of the agreement — which runs until Feb. 9 or when 1.25 million views are reached — shows that users couldn’t say anything negative about the Xbox One. Additionally, they would not get paid if they acknowledged that they were hired by Microsoft.
The Federal Trade Commission could come down on Microsoft following these allegations as they might be in violation of certain guidelines regarding the promotions of a product.
