5 Best Sectors to Watch This Week

This week, life science, aerospace and defense, auto parts, biotechnology and e-commerce are the best sectors on the Portfolio Grader[1] database.

With 70% of the sector’s stocks (16 out of 23) rating a “buy,” the life science sector is one of the strongest. With overall grades of A, Wuxi PharmaTech (Cayman) Inc. Sponsored ADR (WX[2]), Illumina, Inc. (ILMN[3]) and Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO[4]) are buoying the sector. Over the last 12 months, Wuxi PharmaTech (Cayman) Inc. Sponsored ADR is the best performer in this sector, with a 224.4% increase.

Aerospace and defense stands out with 69% of the sector’s stocks (29 out of 42) rating a “buy”. Among aerospace and defense stocks, Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (HII[5]), Alliant Techsystem (ATK[6]) and Boeing Company (BA[7]) are leading the way with A’s. The best performer in this sector is Alliant Techsystem, which saw its price rise 141.7% in the last 12 months.

The auto parts sector is thriving on Portfolio Grader this week, with 68% of its stocks (17 out of 25) currently rating a “buy”. Magna International (MGA[8]), Cooper-Standard Holdings Inc. (CPS[9]) and Delphi Automotive PLC (DLPH[10]) are paving the way for the sector with A grades. Delphi Automotive PLC is performing the best overall in the sector, with a 205.5% increase from 12 months ago.

Biotechnology is thriving this week with 68% of stocks in the sector (55 out of 81) currently rating a “buy”. Gentium S.p.A. Sponsored ADR (GENT[11]), Repligen Corporation (RGEN[12]) and Insys Therapeutics, Inc. (INSY[13]) are all currently earning A’s. Insys Therapeutics, Inc. is the top stock in its sector, with a 471.7% increase from 12 months ago.

The e-commerce sector’s track record is proving one of the best with 65% of its stocks (11 out of 17) rating a “buy”. Out of the e-commerce stocks, Liberty Interactive Corporation Ventures Series A (LVNTA[14]), Vipshop Holdings Ltd. Sponsored ADR (VIPS[15]) and Netflix, Inc. (NFLX[16]) are out front with A’s. Vipshop Holdings Ltd. Sponsored ADR beats the other stocks in its sector, with a 1981.1% increase from a year ago.
