On Friday, Apple (AAPL[1]) quietly released an update for its mobile devices that closed a security vulnerability in the operating system for iPhones, iPads and iPods[2].

The flaw could allow hackers on a mobile network to read secure communications sent to and from AAPL mobile devices. AAPL did not reveal when it had become aware of the vulnerability, which it says “failed to validate the authenticity of the connection” between AAPL mobile devices and websites, Reuters notes.

On security expert said the flaw involves a “fundamental bug in Apple’s SSL implementation.”

While AAPL has released a patch to close the vulnerability in the software that powers iPhones, iPads and iPods, security experts say that the current version of OSX, which runs Apple’s Mac popular line of laptops and desktops is also vulnerable. AAPL has not released a patch for OSX.

Security experts urged owners of AAPL devices to update their iPhones, iPads and iPods as soon as possible. Most devices will alert users that an update is available. Alternately, AAPL device owners can tap the “Settings” icon on their device to check for the update.

Despite the new AAPL stock gained modestly in Monday morning trading. AAPL stock has risen more than 18% over the past twelve months.
