Cat cafes are finally coming to America.
Two cat cafes are planned to be built on the United States’ West Coast. The cafes will be located in San Francisco and Oakland, Calif., and will be named KitTea and Cat Town Cafe. Both of the cat-themed restaurants are looking at a 2014 opening.
But what exactly is a cat cafe?
To put it simply, a cat cafe is a place where cat lovers can go to enjoy felines, food and drink all under one roof. The idea originated in Taiwan, which built its first cat cafe in 1998, but it quickly spread to Japan, which now has over 150 of the unique eateries, the Huffington Post notes.
The cat cafes that are planned to be built in America will work with adoption centers to help stray cats find homes. Both of the American cat cafes are also taking health precautions with the idea and plan to have separate areas for mingling with cats and eating, reports the Huffington Post.
This isn’t the first time that someone has tried to start a cat cafe in America. There were plans for a feline-themed eatery in Boston, but nothing ever came of it.
America isn’t the only country that is adopting cat cafes. Britain has its own cat cafe called Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium. Taking the idea even further, some areas in South Korea have puppy cafes, Jaunted notes.
