DirecTV subscribers will get immediate access to “Local Weather Now,” a service that permits users who have tuned into WeatherNation to obtain weather forecasts and reports for their specific zip-code simply by pressing a button on their DirecTV remote controls.
WeatherNation will so begin running zip-code specific weather forecasts on live channel broadcasts every ten minutes by the end of this week. In addition to zip-code specific forecasting, DirecTV said that WeatherNation will launch “Severe Weather Mix” next month. The Severe Weather Mix service will be activated automatically to provide important news and information to DirecTV subscribers in areas expected to experience dangerous weather.
DirecTV added WeatherNation to its channel lineup last month after a dispute over carriage fees led the satellite service provider to drop The Weather Channel, the Winston-Salem Journal notes.
Last month, DirecTV CEO Mike White indicated that DTV is developing its own online video streaming service. The service, aimed at specific markets, could be unveiled later this year.
Shares of DirecTV fell modestly in Monday morning trading. DTV stock has climbed more than 30% over the past twelve months.
