Anti-Fade: A source tells AppleInsider that Apple (AAPL) is putting the finishing touches on a software update designed to repair a problem some iPhone 5s users have experienced with the Touch ID fingerprint reader. Intermittent failures in Touch ID recognition have been reported by some iPhone 5s owners several months after they set up the fingerprint scanning software. Some users say that fading fingerprint recognition returns even after the system is reset. Apple is said to be including a number of improvements to the Touch ID system that should help address the problem. Apple acquired fingerprint scanning technology when it acquired AuthenTec in 2012. No exact release date for the update was provided, but Apple is expected to issue the update soon. The update could be included in iOS 7.1, which most analysts expect Apple to release in mid-March.

Evidence: Three senior South African police officials have flown to Apple’s California headquarters in a bid to gain access to an iPhone owned by athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is facing murder charges in his home country, the International Business Times notes. South African authorities have asked Apple to help them unlock the iPhone, which is password protected, after failing to bypass the iPhone’s security for months. Pistorius is facing trial in South Africa for fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius claims the incident was a tragic accident. Prosecutors contend that their relationship was troubled. His trial begins in South Africa on Monday. Pistorius claims he can’t recall the four-digit code to unlock the iPhone. Investigators hope to gain access to messages sent from the iPhone. South African prosecutors insist that they have enough evidence to convict Pistorius even if they don’t gain access to the iPhone.

Departure: Apple’s shareholder meeting on Friday could bring one bit of unexpected news.  Forbes contributor Chuck Jones says he won’t be surprised if Apple announces the retirement of CFO Peter Oppenheimer at the meeting. Oppenheimer has been with Apple since 1996. He was named CFO in 2004. Jones notes that Apple may have been preparing for a change in CFO for some time. Last year, it added Luca Maestri, its Corporate Controller, to earnings conference calls, joining Oppenheimer and CEO Tim Cook.
