NBC’s Bob Costas, who has been headlining nightly coverage of the games, will hand off that role to Today Show host Matt Lauer after an eye infection made it impossible for him to appear on Tuesday night. Costas had been stricken with an eye infection since the Sochi games opened over the weekend. On Tuesday morning, he told Matt Lauer that the infection had now jumped to his other eye as well. “I think we’re going to have to go to the bullpen,” Costas said to Matt Lauer on Today.

Costas has headlined every NBC Olympics primetime broadcast since 1988. Costas told Matt Lauer that he hopes the switch will only be for Tuesday night’s broadcast. But he added, “right now I’m walking around and might as well be playing Marco Polo. I have no idea where I am.”

NBC is owned by cable TV giant Comcast (CMCSA).
