3D Printing Helps Doctors Rebuild Man’s Face

3D printing helped to reconstruct the face of a man from Wales after he suffered a motorcycle accident that disfigured his face in 2012.

Cardiff native Stephen Power was lucky to survive the accident and even luckier to learn that doctors were able to reconstruct and reshape his face. Doctors at Morriston Hospital in Swansea broke the man’s cheekbones in order to rebuild his face.

They used a CT scan to examine the man’s skull and create and print a symmetrical 3D model of Power’s skull. The doctors continued to use 3D printing to create plates printed to match Power’s face.

The eight-hour procedure was highly successful as doctors were able to refracture Power’s cheekbones with a cutting guide before remodeling his face.
