3D Printing Helps Doctors Rebuild Man’s Face

3D printing helped to reconstruct the face of a man from Wales after he suffered a motorcycle accident that disfigured his face in 2012.

Cardiff native Stephen Power was lucky to survive the accident and even luckier to learn that doctors were able to reconstruct[1] and reshape his face. Doctors at Morriston Hospital in Swansea broke the man’s cheekbones in order to rebuild his face.

They used a CT scan to examine the man’s skull and create and print a symmetrical 3D model of Power’s skull. The doctors continued to use 3D printing to create plates printed to match Power’s face.

The eight-hour procedure was highly successful as doctors were able to refracture Power’s cheekbones with a cutting guide before remodeling his face.
