Girl Scouts Asked to Sever Ties With Barbies

Girl Scouts are being asked to sever their ties with Barbies after one of the dolls starred in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition.

Two advocacy groups are urging the Girl Scouts of the U.S. to end their partnership with Mattel (MAT) as they believe the dolls sexualize young girls. The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and the Center for a New American Dream are the two groups asking girls to separate themselves from the dolls.

“Holding Barbie, the quintessential fashion doll, up as a role model for Girl Scouts simultaneously sexualizes young girls,” said Susan Linn, director of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood.

“[Barbie] idealizes an impossible body type, and undermines the Girl Scouts’ vital mission to build `girls of courage, confidence and character,’” she added.

The partnership between the two parties was struck last August and it includes a Barbie-themed activity book, a website, and a Barbie participation patch.
