The current Mega Millions jackpot has risen to $400 million, making it the sixth-largest lottery prize in U.S. history.
The next Mega Millions drawing will take place on Tuesday, March 18 at 11 p.m. EST. If a player matches all five numbers and the Mega Ball, the winner can choose to take the lump sum cash option of $224 million before taxes.
The $400 million prize is the third-largest Mega Millions jackpot ever recorded. The largest-ever Mega Millions lottery took place two years ago when three tickets split a cash payout of $474 million from a $656 million prize.
The second-largest Mega Millions jackpot saw a California man and a Georgia woman split the lump sum of a $648 million prize last December.
The last Mega Millions drawing took place on Friday, March 14 where no one matched the winning numbers of 7, 20, 40, 54, 69 and 12.
The odds of a ticket matching five numbers and the Mega Ball are about 258 million to 1. If no one matches all six numbers, the jackpot will roll over to Friday’s drawing where the grand prize could rise to $500 million.
The Mega Millions jackpot has been rising since January 3 when a Tennessee woman won the $61 million grand prize.
