NSFW: American Apparel Stirs (More) Controversy With New ‘Made in Bangladesh’ Ad

Never a stranger to risqué advertising, American Apparel (AAP[1]) has released an ad that will definitely make people look twice[2].

The print ad features a young woman named Maks standing naked from the waist up. The words “Made in Bangladesh” are stamped across her chest. In the text accompanying the photo, American Apparel says that Maks was born in Bangladesh, but came to California with her family when she was four years old, and now works as a merchandiser with American Apparel.

American Apparel also notes that Maks was raised as a Muslim, but has “distanced herself from Islamic traditions.”

Maks is described as “woman continuously in search of new creative outlets.” According to American Apparel, she “unreservedly embraced” the photo taken for the ad.

Prior ad campaigns by American Apparel have tested the bounds of acceptable taste. American Apparel recently placed fake pubic hair on some of the mannequins[4] placed in store windows.

American Apparel shares fell more than 1% in Friday morning trading. American Apparel stock has declined by more than 50% over the past 12 months.
