PlayStation 4 Sales Hit 6 Million Milestone

[1]Sony’s (SNE[2]) next-generation video gaming console continues to post strong sales[3].

The PlayStation 4 has now sold 6 million units around the world, according to Sony. That marks a healthy increase from the 5.3 million PlayStation 4 units that the Japanese electronics giant said had been sold through Feb. 8, CNET notes.

Japanese consumers finally got their chance to buy the PlayStation 4 when it debuted in Sony’s home market on Feb. 22. The PlayStation 4 has sold 377,000 units in Japan since it launched in the country.

The PlayStation 4 hit North American store shelves back in November. PS4 sales were reported to have exceeded 2 million units during the first two after its launch.

Microsoft (MSFT[4]) also launched its next-generation Xbox One console[5] in November. Microsoft has not released any recent sales figures for the Xbox One — which is priced $100 higher than the PS4.

Last month, Sony said that the Playstation 4 had generated almost double the Xbox One’s sales[6] during January.

The PS4 is a bright spot in Sony’s otherwise troubled electronics business. Sony recently announced plans to exit the personal computer market[7] and separate its money-losing TV business.

Sony stock climbed more than 1% in Tuesday trading. SNE stock has risen about 10% over the past year.
