Popcorn Time is the new Netflix (NFLX)… except for the fact that it’s not legal.

This new free movie streaming app allows users to choose from a large library of movies and stream them online with little to no hassle. Here are four things you should know about Popcorn Time.

  • Easy and free movie streaming – This open-source project allows users to search for movies in the search bar and stream them at high speeds without paying any fees or dealing with ads.
  • Features – Popcorn Time has plenty of features including the option to stream movies in 720p and high-definition. The search bar is easy to use and it has a ton of movies including some that only came out a few months ago. In one test, American Hustle was streamed in less than two minutes—the movie has not been released on iTunes or Amazon Instant Video yet.
  • Developers – A programmer and designer in Buenos Aires, Argentina known simply as Sebastian is the mastermind behind Popcorn Time. He is co-developing the program with 20 collaborators. The app is available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux Computers.
  • It’s not legal – Did we say this already? The app warns that it may not be legal in your country when you first download it. However, developer Sebastian does not anticipate any legal problems with Popcorn Time. “We don’t expect legal issues,” he said. “We don’t host anything, and none of the developers makes (sic) any money. There are no ads, no premium accounts, and no subscription fees or anything like that. It’s an experiment to learn and share.”

NFLX stock is down close to 2% Monday.
