The school called the backpack a distraction

The backpack at the center of the controversy is emblazoned with characters from the animated TV show My Little Pony. The boy admits that some of the other students zeroed in on the My Little Pony backpack, using it as an excuse to bully him. The school said the My Little Pony backpack had become a distraction and told him not to bring it to school, People Magazine notes.

That didn’t sit well with the boy’s mother who told a local TV station that: “Saying a lunchbox is a trigger for bullying is like saying a short skirt is a trigger for rape. It’s flawed logic, it doesn’t make any sense.”

The My Little Pony backpack controversy has spawned considerable online commentary and a Facebook (FB) page.

Hasbro (HAS) launched the My Little Pony brand of colorful plastic figurines in the early 1980’s. The brand has since become the focus of a 1986 animated feature film and a number of animated TV series.
