Twitter (TWTR[1]) could be getting rid of hashtags and @replies as part of an effort to make the website more user friendly.

Twitter[2]The speculation[3] began after head of news partnerships Vivian Schiller said that they are “working on moving the scaffolding of Twitter into the background.” Company representatives clarified Schiller’s comments by saying that they are trying to increase high-quality interactions for new and current users.

“We took initial steps in that direction with the introduction of media forward timelines and in-line social actions in October,” Twitter representatives said. “And we’re already starting to see early signs that those initiatives are working well.”

TWTR stock is down over 5% Monday.
