Verizon Wants to Be Your Mobile TV Provider

VerizonPromo1 Verizon Wants to Be Your Mobile TV ProviderOn Tuesday, Verizon (VZ) signaled that it plans to move deeper into online TV streaming for mobile devices.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley (MS) Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said the telecommunications giant is discussing potential deals with media companies that would allow it to transmit TV content to mobile devices through its Verizon FiOS and wireless networks. McAdam said that he had met personally with content company CEOs to explore ways to stream content across FiOS, Reuters notes.

Additionally, McAdam noted that Verizon is pressuring Netflix (NFLX) to agree to pay Verizon to ensure speedy connections for its subscribers who use Verizon FiOS. Netflix recently agreed to pay Comcast (CMCSA) interconnect fees. McAdam predicted that Verizon and Netflix will come to a similar arrangement.

McAdam’s comments follow the announcement of a deal that will allow Dish Network (DISH) to transmit Disney (DIS) content over the Internet. Last month, Disney and DISH settled litigation over the satellite provider’s DVR ad-skipping technology.

Earlier this year, VZ posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings, boosted by strong subscriber growth from its wireless business.

Shares of VZ sank slightly in Wednesday morning trading.
