On Friday, Amazon (AMZN) unveiled a new device designed to make it easier for AmazonFresh consumers to compile shopping lists.
The Amazon Dash is a handheld tool that includes a barcode scanner and microphone. Users can scan the barcodes on product containers or speak into the Amazon Dash’s microphone to add items to their AmazonFresh accounts. Amazon is offering the Dash without charge during its testing phase, Newsday notes.
Only AmazonFresh account holders can use the Dash device. AmazonFresh — Amazon’s online grocery business — is itself still in the trial stage. AmazonFresh is currently available only to residents of Seattle, San Francisco and selected areas of Southern California.
In order to obtain the Dash wand, AmazonFresh users must receive an invitation from Amazon to try out the device.
Amazon has indicated that it plans to expand AmazonFresh into 20 major metropolitan areas around the U.S. and possibly in some overseas markets this year.
AMZN stock slid more than 1% in Monday morning trading. Over the past year, AMZN stock has gained more than 20%.
