You may know that a blood moon is coming in April, but do you know what it is?
A blood moon –also called a total lunar eclipse– is when the moon is completely covered in the Earth’s shadow. During a blood moon, the moon will turn to a shade of red and sometimes brown. The red color is caused by all of the sunsets and sunrises occurring on the Earth being reflected on the surface of the moon, reports The Los Angeles Times.
The term blood moon doesn’t originate from astronomers and more likely comes from John Hagee, a Christian pastor. Hagee wrote a book in 2013 titled Four Blood Moons: Something is about to change that talks about the upcoming blood moons in 2014 and 2015, the L.A. Times notes.
