Google Doodle for Earth Day 2014 Features Rufous Hummingbird, 5 More

The Google (GOOG[1]) Earth Day 2014 doodle is featuring a rufous hummingbird and five additional live-action sketches of animals.

[2]The others are: a veiled chameleon, a moon jellyfish, a dung beetle, a puffer fish and two Japanese macaques. (Click on the Google doodle[3] to rotate through the full list.)

This year marks the 44th Earth Day since its beginning in 1970 — in what is now considered the birth of the environmental movement.

Earth Day 2014 is organized by Earth Day Network, a global group that works to “inform and energize populations so they will act to secure a healthy future for themselves and their children.”

Why Google chose the Rufous hummingbird is anyone’s guess, but the small bird has some interesting qualities.

The Google doodle features a link that gives you more info on each animal, so let’s allow Google tell us more about it:

The Rufous Hummingbird is a small hummingbird, about 8 cm long with a long, straight and very slender bill. These birds are known for their incredible flight skills. Some are known to fly 2,000 miles during their migratory transits.

The Rufous hummingbird’s migratory pattern goes through the Rocky Mountains down into Mexico.

Google’s depiction of the birds are spot on: males sport a white breast and an orange-red throat patch (some males have some green on their crown); and females tout green and white coloring, with orange feathers and a dark tail.

As for the rest?

Dung beetles are beetles that feed partly or exclusively on dungs or feces. They posses exceptional dung disposal capacity and one dung beetle can bury dung that is 250 times heavier than itself in one night.

Tetraodontidae is a family of primarily marine and estuarine fish of the order Tetraodontiformes, which include Pufferfish. …(Let’s note here that they, yes, can be deadly to eat if prepared the wrong way.)

The veiled chameleon, Chamaeleo calyptratus, is a large species of chameleon found in the mountain regions of Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. It is also sometimes referred to as the Yemen chameleon.

The Japanese macaque, is a terrestrial Old World monkey species native to Japan. It is also sometimes known as the snow monkey because it lives in areas where snow covers the ground for months each year.

The moon jellyfish is translucent, usually about 25–40 cm (10–16 in) in diameter, and can be recognized by its four horseshoe-shaped gonads, easily seen through the top of the bell. It feeds by collecting medusae, plankton, and mollusks with its tentacles, and bringing them into its body for digestion.

GOOG stock is down 5% year to date.
