Google Tries to Trademark the Word ‘Glass’

Google (GOOG[1]) has tried to trademark the word “Glass”[2] for its upcoming Google Glass product.
[3]Google filed to trademark the word Glass in a specific style of font. However, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) denied the trademark for a couple of reasons. The first reason that the USPTO gave for denying the trademark is that there are already several trademarks that have been approved or are pending that involve the word glass. Secondly, the USPTO doesn’t believe that the word can be trademarked due to it being a word that can describe the product, reports Mashable.
Google hasn’t given up its fight to secure a trademark on Glass and argues that the popularity of its product assures that the trademark wouldn’t be confusing. It also claims that Glass isn’t a descriptive term of its product as it contains no glass, Mashable notes.
Two companies are standing against Google’s efforts to trademark the word Glass. These companies are Federal Holding and Border Stylo. Both of these companies filed Notices of Opposition against the company’s trademark in December last year, Tech Times[4] notes.
GOOG shares were down slightly as of Monday morning.
