This can result in leaked fuel and could also lead to a fire. There aren’t any reports of fires caused by the spider issue.

Mazda6s affected by the recall include model years 2010, 2011 and 2012. Only the Mazda6 models equipped with a 2.5-liter engine that comes from the factory in Flat Rock, Michigan are affected by the recall.

Owners of the affected Mazda6 model are able to take their vehicles to a Mazda dealer for inspection and repair. The inspection will include clearing the canister vent line. If a spider is found in the canister vent line, then the the fuel tank and the check valve on the canister vent line will be replaced.

Mazda will also will also update the software of the Powertrain Control Module to decrease pressure in the fuel tank. All of this will be performed free of charge to owners of the affected Mazda6 models.

This is the second time that Mazda has had to issue a recall due to spiders. The first occurred in 2011 when it was discovered that Yellow Sac spiders were making homes in some of the company’s vehicles.
