The big environmental day takes place on April 22 every year. Widely considered to be the “birth of the modern environmental movement,” Earth Day first started in 1970 following the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

As the U.S. saw itself more affected by air pollution, its citizens began protesting to save the planet. In the 1960s, mainstream America was largely ignorant of the environmental problems hurting the earth.

As the concern for the environment grew in the U.S., people began getting more involved and started celebrating Earth Day in 1970. As noted by the day’s website, Earth Day “capitalized on the emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center.”

So when is Earth Day 2014? This Tuesday.
