Pertussis –commonly called whooping cough– is an infection caused by bacteria that spreads through the air. The whooping cough outbreak has affected several counties in Ga., including Colquitt, Mitchell and Thomas, and officials are working with schools to prevent the outbreak from getting worse, reports Fox News.

In San Diego County the whooping cough outbreak has hit nearly 200 people since the start of 2014. This is about half of the county’s 430 cases from 2013 and surpasses the 39 cases that were reported at the same time last year, The Latino Post notes.

Citizens in southern parts of Alberta, Canada are also being hit by a whooping cough outbreak. According to Alberta Health Services, cases of whooping cough increase every few years. 39 cases of the infection has been reported so far. The last outbreaks in the area occurred in 2012 and 2009, reports Huffington Post Canada.
