The new Power Rangers movie will be the first in a franchise. The deal was announced by Saban CEO Haim Saban and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, reports Variety.
MTV.com speculates that the new Power Rangers movie will be “a darker, grittier reboot” that would fall in line with other Lions Gate films, such as Hunger Games and Divergent.
The Power Rangers TV series first launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The series used stock footage from the Japanese TV show Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, which is part of the Super Sentai series, combined with new footage of American actors.
A Power Rangers movie was released in 1995, titled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. A second Power Rangers movie, titled Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, was released in 1997. This movie handled the transition from Power Rangers Zeo to Power Rangers Turbo.
