AMZN, T: AT&T to Be Exclusive Carrier of Amazon Smartphone

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, AT&T (T) will exclusively carry the Amazon smartphone (AMZN).

amazon smartphoneCiting multiple confidential sources, the newspaper reported that Wednesday’s announcement about the launch of the Amazon smartphone will come with news that AT&T will be its carrier.

The phone reportedly comes with an interface that allows for 3D viewing capability –without glasses.

Analysts are saying the phones could add more than $3 billion annually to Amazon’s revenue stream. (Read our article on the announcement here.)

The arrangement extends Amazon’s relationship with AT&T, which also provides wireless service to Kindle tablets and e-readers. The move could help AT&T attract new subscribers at a time of intense competition among wireless carriers.

This isn’t the first time that T took the reigns as the prime handler of a new smartphone launch.

When Apple’s iPhone launched in 2007, AT&T was the exclusive carrier.

AMZN stock is down 17% year to date.

T stock is down .2% year to date.
