Dollars. Greenbacks. Cash. Everyone loves money, especially investors. And believe it or not, even after a five year bull market, retail investors are still holding a ton of cash — around 40% of their portfolios in fact. The reason? Fear of equities and another big crash. Distrust of Wall Street is rampant, especially among Millennials. After coming of age during the recession, they have more in common with Depression-era adults in terms of saving and investing. Here’s Paul Sullivan at The New York Times with more on our cash problem.

Disciplined Investing (Horan Capital): But are we really holding that much cash? Or is it just smoke and mirrors?

The Atlantic (Conor Friedersdorf): Despite the need for physical cash, some people want to destroy it. The nerve!

Slash Gear (J.C. Torres): Don’t worry. We can always use bitcoins instead of cash. One miner controls 51% of the supply.

The Guardian (Martin Chulov): Apparently, the Iraqi militants also have a ton a cash. Like … $2 billion worth.

Seattle PI (Nataliya Vasilyeva & David McHugh): Unfortunately, the Ukraine doesn’t have any cash or natural gas. Russia turns off the spigot.

The New York Times’ DealBook (Michael J. De La Merced): Medical device marker Medtronic (MDT) has a lot of cash– enought to pay $42 billion for Coviden (COV). Merger Monday lives on.

Reuters (Jens Hack): The big money is also flowing in the industrials space. Siemens and Mitsubishi get ready to take on GE (GE) in a bidding war for France’s Alstom. The battle will be fierce.

Morningstar (John Rekenthaler): At least the little guys can feel better about our investments on the fee front. The race to the bottom is on!

The Aleph Blog (David Merkel): However, high fees can be justified … if you actually work with a good advisor.
