Dreamworks bought the rights to Felix from Felix the Cat Productions for an undisclosed amount. The company will use the iconic cartoon character to start a fashion line focused on him. He will also appear in the company’s plans for an upgraded experience with Santa Claus later this year, reports The Los Angeles Times.
Dreamworks’ decision to launch a clothing line and not a movie with Felix the Cat likely comes from pressure it’s facing to become more diverse. Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg says that Felix is “especially popular” in Asia, The Verge notes.
Dreamworks owns the right to several classic characters. These characters include Casper the Ghost, Waldo from Where’s Waldo and Lassie. The characters were obtained by the company when it bought Classic Media in 2012, L.A. Times notes.
