Microsoft Start Menu Won’t Be Back Until …

Windows 8 users who were looking forward to the reappearance of Microsoft’s (MSFT[1]) Start Menu will have to wait longer[2].

microsoft-store-best-laptop-deals[3]Sources tell ZDNet that the Microsoft Start Menu won’t be coming to the Windows 8.1 update, which is likely to arrive in August. Rumor had circulated that the second update for Windows 8.1 would feature a mini Microsoft Start Menu, but now it appears that won’t happen until Microsoft launches its next major Windows release — Windows 9 — in April of 2015.

When a new Microsoft Start Menu does appear, don’t expect it to be the same as in pre-Windows 8 releases. The new Microsoft Start Menu is expected to include Metro elements.

The ditching of the traditional Microsoft Start Menu from Windows 8 rankled many users. Microsoft has moved to restore some functionality to make Windows 8 easier for mouse and keyboard-centric users to navigate.

Shares of MSFT slipped slightly in Monday morning trading.
