A 12-year-old boy that went was missing for 12 days was discovered in his father’s basement on Thursday.
The boy was staying with his father and stepmother in Detroit when he went missing on June 14. The boy’s father, Charlie Bothuell IV, alerted police that he was missing and make several tearful pleas for help finding his son on TV, reports the Associated Press.
Police found the boy hiding in the basement of his father’s condo behind some boxes and a plastic drum. There was bedding a, soda bottles and a box of cereal found with the boy. They boy was returned to his mother, Africa Shippings, after he was discovered. Police had searched the home for the boy on three separate occasions. Officers believe he wasn’t in the basement the entire time he was missing, the Associated Press notes.
“In 37 years of policing, I will tell you, I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig told The Los Angeles Times. “But the outcome, I couldn’t be happier.”
