Try, Then Buy: Motorola’s Moto X Promo Sells Out in Hours

For a penny, a lot of people were willing to try Motorola’s Moto X smartphon[1]e.

In a bid to raise consumer awareness of the Moto X, Motorola launched a “Try Then Buy” promotion on Monday morning, beginning at 12 a.m. Under the program, consumers could place a one-cent deposit on a Moto X, customizing the phone online, and then having the Moto X mailed to them for a two-week trial, PCMagazine noted.

While Motorola didn’t disclose how many Moto X phones were issued under the program, by 9 a.m. Monday morning, the promotion’s supply of Moto X phones was exhausted. “We’ve sold all the Moto X phones we allotted for this promotion,” Motorola said on its website.

Consumers who receive the Moto X for a penny can return it to Motorola for no additional charge. Those who like the Moto X can pay $449.99 for the 64GB version.

The Moto X shipped under the program comes with a pre-installed SIM card. The two-week trial period begins as soon as a consumer receives their Moto X.

Earlier this year Google (GOOG[3]) announced that it had sold its Motorola unit to Lenovo[4] for $2.9 billion.
