Walgreens Increases Basket Size, Sales Go Up

Pharmacy sales jumped during May


Shares of Walgreen (WAG) climbed more than 3% in Wednesday morning trading after the drugstore chain operator said Walgreens same-store sales showed a solid gain last month.

WalgreensWalgreens said that May’s comparable same-store sales rose 4.4% compared to last year. Total sales at Walgreens stores — including those open less than 12 months — jumped 6% to $6.57 billion. Walgreens said that comparable store sales suffered a negative 0.8% impact from the introduction of new generic drugs, while overall May sales were affected by an additional Saturday and one less Wednesday this May compared to last, RTT News noted.

During May, Walgreens said that pharmacy sales — which accounted for 64.2% of total store sales — gained 7.9%.

WAG stock closed at $71.56 per share on Tuesday.
