Google has since replaced the Go player doodle with a link to D Day memorial materials.

June 6 marks the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings, in which thousands of Allied soldiers died seizing French beaches, setting in motion the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany during World War II.

The solemn anniversary was marked in France by world leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama, who spoke at an American cemetery in Normandy.

GOOG stock rose slightly in Friday morning trading.
