GOOG: Did Google Try to Buy Spotify?

Google and Spotify deny acquisition claims

Despite recent reports that Google (GOOG) tried to buy Spotify, both companies are denying these claims.

goog-google-spotifyThe Wall Street Journal reported that Google may have tried to buy Spotify for anywhere from $4 billion to $5 billion. However, both of the companies have denied this. They did admit to talking about commercial deals, but never to an acquisition, Re/code notes.

The allegedly non-existent Google, Spotify deal came from a report in December that the former had failed to purchase a foreign company for the previously mentioned price. WSJ also mentioned that Re/Code reported on the deal Monday. However, Kara Swisher, the author of the cited Re/code article, claims this wasn’t the case. She also said that she got confirmation from both companies that there was no such deal being talked about.

WSJ‘s full story of Google allegedly trying to buy Spotify can be seen here. The publication also looks at the tech giant’s purchase of Songza as possible evidence that it may have tried to purchase Spotify.
