A blog post by Google’ Orkut team acknowledges that the service will shutdown on September 30, 2014. The reason given for the social media website’s demise is that other services ran by the company, such as YouTube, have outpaced it.
Those still using Orkut won’t notice any changes until the shutdown. Users of the social media website can transfer their profile information over to Google Takeout. As of June 30, 2014, it is no longer possible to create a new Orkut account.
Google will also store an archive of communities and groups on Orkut. The groups will be available for everyone to view and those who don’t want to be included in the archive can remove the social media website from their account.
