Laverne Cox made history by becoming the first openly transgender actress to become an Emmy nominee.
The 30-year-old actress — who stars in Netflix‘s (NFLX) Orange is the New Black -I was elated to find out that she was nominated after reading online about her chances of getting a nomination the previous night. Out of this year’s Emmy nominations, Cox’s is by far the most groundbreaking.
The transgender actress is proud to be the first “openly-trans” actress to get an Emmy nomination but she says she’s not the first. Cox said another transgender actress won an Emmy years ago but she was not out.
“Oh, my god, it’s going to take me awhile to get used to saying ‘Emmy-nominated actress,'” Cox said. “I only quit my restaurant job a year ago, so let me tell you, this is pretty good.”
