The Tesla Model S Was Hacked as Part of a Competition

College students hacked into[1] the Tesla (TSLA[2]) Model S and control some of the car’s functions.

Qihoo 360 (QIHU[4]) sponsored a competition at the annual Syscan conference in Beijing, offering $10,000 to anyone who managed to open the Tesla Model S’ doors and engine. Zhejiang University students impressed by opening the vehicle’s doors, sun roof, switching on the headlights and sounding the horn while the car was driving.

Team ‘yo’ hacked into the Model S through a design flaw that was not specified. Qihoo 360 said that it will publish more details on team yo’s performance in due time.

Tesla said that such a competition could be helpful in ensuring the security of cars by finding flaws in its designs. The company also said it hopes researchers will use good judgment when discovering security flaws.

TSLA stock is up close to 1% Monday afternoon.
