The upgrade will allow users to send and receive direct messages as if they’re using a chat application such as WhatsApp. Twitter’s new function will make it easier to communicate privately as users will no longer be restricted to 140 characters when sending direct messages.
The company said that the upgrade will make it easier to access one’s private history and delete old messages. The upgrade will take effect on iPhone and Android devices alike.
“There’s a real opportunity for us, when we think about our private messaging, to strengthen the core of our Twitter product by making it easier for users to move more fluidly between the public conversation that happens everywhere on Twitter, and the private conversation between you and a friend or you and a few friends,” said Twitter CEO Dick Costolo in a statement.
TWTR stock is up close to 3% Friday afternoon.
