The new Amazon ad system is called “Amazon Sponsored Links.” The online retailer intends to use Sponsored Links to replace ads provided by Google on its website first. After this, the company may stretch the service’s reach to include other websites not owned by it, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Amazon Sponsored Links may be tested before the end of the year. The online retailer is also planning to use the service to tests new types of ads. Sponsored links may work similar to Google’s AdWords, which the online search engine uses to put sponsored links in with search results, WSJ notes.
Amazon Sponsored Links won’t be the first time that the online retailer has had to compete against Google. Google has recently moved to challenged the online retailer with planned expansions of its Shopping Express and offering same-day book deliveries through the service.
AMZN shares saw a modest increase as of Monday afternoon.
