According to a blog post by Facebook employees Khalid El-Ariniand and Joyce Tang, the social media website will be suppressing clickbait articles due to users’ preferences. The company discovered through a survey that 80% of its users wanted to know what an article was about before clicking on it.

Facebook will determine if an article is clickbait based on a few factors. One of these factors is how long users spend away from Facebook after clicking on a link. If they are gone for awhile, the article likely wasn’t clickbait. The opposite is likely true if people return soon after clicking a link.

Facebook will also look at Likes and Shares of links to determine if they are clickbait. If users click a link shared by a friend but don’t Like or Share it, then the link likely didn’t contain information that was deemed as valuable by those users. The social media website will also check to see if users are talking about links in the comment sections under them.

FB shares were up slightly as of Tuesday afternoon.
