An easy way to avoid downloading the Facebook Messenger app actually involves downloading it, sort of.

Users with the Facebook app are prompted to download the Messenger app when they attempt to check their messages. Do this, but stop the Messenger app before it finishes downloading. Now you can check messages through the normal Facebook app. This trick works on devices running Apple’s (AAPL) iOS or Google’s (GOOG) Andoird operating systems, reports Mashable.

Facebook users can also avoid downloading the Facebook Messenger app by using their smartphone’s web browser. While this trick does allow users to send messages without the app, it won’t alert them of notifications through their smartphone like the normal and Messenger apps do.

Of course, there is another way to avoid downloading the Facebook Messenger app; don’t use Facebook. This may seem like a strange option, but there’s actually a website that asks users to take 99 days away from the website and complete a happiness survey before, during and after their Facebook fast.
