GOOG, AMZN: Google Joins Amazon in Drone Delivery Tests

Google (GOOG[1]), announced on Thursday[2], that it’s working on a drone-delivery system that differs from Amazon’s (AMZN[3]) drones.

[4]The drone-delivery system is being handled by Google X, which is the same part of the company responsible for Glass and its self-driving cars. The drones, which are part of “Project Wing”, have been used to transport various items, including cow vaccines, candy bars and dog treats, to farmers in Queensland, Australia, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Project Wing prototypes have a single wing that is five feet wide. They are powered by four propellers that can adjust to different angles for different parts of flight. These drones stand two and a half feet tall. Items carried by the drones are stored in a gap in the middle of the wing, WSJ notes.

“Even just a few of these, being able to shuttle nearly continuously could service a very large number of people in an emergency situation,” Astro Teller, a Google X member, told The Verge[5] while talking about the Project Wing drones.
