Ballmer cites outside sources as why he left the board

Steve Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft (MSFT), has left the company’s board.

steve-ballmer-microsoft-msftIn an open letter addressed to the current CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, Ballmer cited outside duties as his reason for leaving the company’s board.

“I think it would be impractical for me to continue to serve on the board, and it is best for me to move off,” Steve Ballmer said in his open letter to Satya Nadella. “The fall will be hectic between teaching a new class and the start of the NBA season so my departure from the board is effective immediately.”

Satya Nadella responded to Steve Ballmer’s open letter with one of his own. In his letter, Nadella thanks Ballmer for the time he spent helping him during his transition to CEO of the company. He also sent Ballmer well wishes from him and the entire Microsoft Board of Directors.

MSFT shares were down slightly as of Wednesday afternoon.
