The fact that Twitter Inc. (TWTR) and Facebook, Inc. (FB) are popular social networking services throughout the world is not lost on most people. North America may be the largest user base for both companies, but this doesn’t mean they are overlooking the rest of the globe.

According to the Ipsos MRBI Social Networking Quarterly report for Q3 2014, Facebook is top dog when it comes to social networking in Ireland. Twitter finds itself in second place, trailing the leader by a large margin.twtr, twitter stock price, twitterThe report shows that 29% of people in Ireland use Twitter, which sounds like a big number until you see what Facebook is up to. Mark Zuckerberg’s brainchild has captivated the minds of Irish users, with 61% of the population using the service.

What about Growth?

Mediabistro took a closer look at the numbers, finding that despite the fact that Twitter is trailing Facebook, it is actually growing at a faster rate in Ireland. When the past two years are taken into consideration, Twitter has gained seven percentage points. Of course, Facebook is no slouch, picking up five percentage points along the way.

Daily Use is Important

It is one thing for a large portion of the population to have a profile on the top social media sites. It is another thing entirely for these people to actually use the service on a daily basis.

The report shows that 71% of FB users use the site daily. This is much greater than the 38% of Twitter users who turn to the site everyday.

In an overall sense, Twitter is trailing Facebook in Ireland. When you dig down deeper, however, TWTR has nothing to be ashamed of. The service is growing at a nice pace, and a large portion of the population uses the site regularly. Catching FB may be a tall order, but you never know what will happen given enough time.
