Edward Snowden recently advised users against these services in a virtual appearance at the The New Yorker Festival. He did give Google and Faceboon credit for increasing their security, but said that they were still dangerous to those looking for privacy. He also spoke out against Dropbox not offering local encryption, reports Digital Trends.

Edward Snowden said Apple (AAPL) was doing the right thing with its encryption efforts. He also noted that a good alternative to Dropbox is SpiderOak, a similar service that offers protection to its users, International Business Times notes.

During his virtual appearance, Edward Snowden claimed that smartphone users should switch to RedPhone and Silent Circle for texting. He also said he’d be willing to come back to the U.S. for a fair, open trial, but that the government hasn’t agreed to it, reports Digital Trends.
