YouTube, which is owned by Google (GOOG), is considering an ad-free version.

youtube-ad-free-googAn ad-free version of YouTube is currently being worked on by Google’s Susan Wojcicki, who took over leadership of the video sharing website earlier this year. The new version of the website may be available to anyone willing to pay a subscription fee, The Wall Street Journal notes.

Wojcicki’s inspiration for a new version of the website comes from mobile apps. She notes that there are free apps with ads that can be paid for to remove the ads and that this model would add more choices to the website’s users. YouTube already allows users to create channels that require a subscription, WSJ notes.

“Really, having the ad sales has been one benefit,” Wojcicki told Recode. “I think it’s important to point out that when YouTube was acquired by Google, it was still a pretty nascent business, and most of the people were hobbyists. … So I think what we’ve gotten is a long-term consistent investment.”
