5 Worst Sectors to Avoid This Week

According to the Portfolio Grader database this week, the reit, metals and mining, water utilities, infrastructure and independent power and renewable electricity producers sectors are at the bottom.

The reit sector looks weak, with 73% of its stocks (124 out of 169) rated a “sell”. Hatteras Financial (HTS), DDR Corp. (DDR) and Health Care REIT, Inc. (HCN) are dragging down the sector overall, each earning a low grade of F. Overall, Hatteras Financial is the poorest performer in this sector. Its share price has dropped 29.4% in the last 12 months.

The metals and mining sector is lagging this week with 68% of its stocks (62 out of 91) rated a “sell”. Newmont Mining Corporation (NEM), Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR (GFI) and Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. Class A (SCHN) are pushing the sector down with F grades. Over the last 12 months, Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR is the worst performer in this sector, with a 70.6% decline.

With 67% of its stocks (4 out of 6) rated “sell,” the water utilities sector is struggling this week. Among water utilities stocks, Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR (SBS), SJW Corp. (SJW) and Aqua America, Inc. (WTR) are lingering near the bottom with grades of D. The worst performer in this sector is Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR, which saw its price sink 84.6% in the last 12 months.

The infrastructure sector is dragging, with 60% of its stocks (3 out of 5) rated a “sell”. Out of the infrastructure stocks, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico SAB de CV Sponsored ADR Class B (PAC), Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste SA de CV Sponsored ADR Class B (ASR) and Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte SAB de CV Sponsored ADR Class B (OMAB) are near the bottom with D’s.

The independent power and renewable electricity producers sector is trailing behind others this week, with 60% of its stocks (6 out of 10) rated a “sell”. TransAlta Corporation (TAC), Empresa Nacional de Electricidad S.A. Sponsored ADR (EOC) and Calpine Corporation (CPN) are all currently earning F’s. TransAlta Corporation is the worst performer in this sector, with a 47.9% decline in the last 12 months.
