A Canadian couple that just had a baby in Hawaii is stuck with a bill of almost $1 million for the birth.

Jennifer Huculak-Kimmel was only six months pregnant when she gave birth to her daughter Reece on Dec. 10, 2013. Her water broke during her trip to Hawaii with her husband and she was in a hospital for six weeks before Reece was born by emergency cesarean section.

Huculak-Kimmel acquired insurance from Blue Cross before the trip and got clearance to travel from her doctor. She now has a $950,000 bill that the insurance provider refuses to pay because of “pre-existing conditions.”

The only pre-existing condition that Reece’s mother had was a bladder infection she developed two months before the trip. Her doctor said she could still travel and told the specialists in Hawaii about it in case anything happened.

“We would like Blue Cross to step up and pay for it,” Huculak-Kimmel said. “We did this story to warn people that it can happen to anybody.”
